Optispeech

Specific Aim 1: Quantify differences in tongue shape/position during the production of speech sounds in adult healthy speakers that can be used as targets for speech therapy.

Specific Aim 2: Demonstrate that feedback from the 3D real-time avatar can be used to guide tongue shape and movement in adult healthy speakers.

Specific Aim 3: Demonstrate that individuals with dysarthria can use Opti-speech and that Opti-speech provides an efficacious means for reducing their speech errors.

Study for Aims 1 and 2

This study has two phases. The purpose of the first phase is to record tongue movements during speech in a group of adults. The purpose of the second phase is to demonstrate that feedback from a three-dimensional real-time visualization of the tongue can be used to direct tongue placement during speech sounds.

Inclusion Criteria

  • English-speaking adult
  • No hearing loss
  • No history of neurological trauma

Study for Aim 3

The purpose of this study is to determine whether a 3 dimensional representation of the tongue that allows visualization of tongue movement can improve speech sound production for individuals with dysarthria.

Inclusion Criteria

  • English-speaking adult with Cerebral Palsy
  • No hearing loss
  • No history of neurological truama
